Fans of the tapeo – wandering from bar to bar enjoying a few of the tasty snacks known as tapas, with a drink – shouldn’t miss TaPalma, the annual tapas fest in Palma de Mallorca. You can always find tapas anywhere in Mallorca’s capital city (and elsewhere on the island), but this four-day event is rather special, in that participating establishments compete to create the most innovative and tasty tapas.
TaPalma gives us, the nibbling public, the chance to vote for the best tapa and the chef responsible gets a feather in his cap (or not, as that may be unhygienic in the kitchen. Isn’t English a funny language?). So, expect something a little more creative than Russian salad or a date wrapped in bacon. (Of course, date here is the fruit, not the person you’re out with for the night; that would be too weird).
TaPalma 2015 is expected to feature around 40 establishments in Mallorca’s capital, offering special tapas and pintxos (morsels speared onto a piece of bread). Prices are very reasonable – around a couple of euros each. For the 11th edition of TaPalma, five tapas routes have been planned – and a free map and voting card will be available containing details of the participating bars and restaurants and their tapas.
This year you can also combine your tapeo with some shopping as many shops in the city will stay open late for the duration of TaPalma, which takes place from Thursday to Sunday, October 8th-11th. If you fancy visiting Mallorca for this event, bear in mind that Monday, 12th is a national holiday in Spain. Everywhere will be very quiet. And some of us may be recovering from an overindulgence in tapas . . .
