This year’s Grand Gourmet Award had a new venue: the 5-star hotel Castell Son Claret, near Es Capdellà. Some 155 people attended (some of them flying to the island especially for the event) for an extraordinary gastronomic experience, created by eight superb chefs (seven from Michelin-starred restaurants). The chefs: Fernando P Arellano (Zaranda, Castell Son Claret) Tomeu Caldentey (Es Molí d’en Bou) Macarena de Castro (Rte Jardín) Marc Fosh (Simply Fosh) Andreu Genestra (Andreu Genestra) […]

It’s an opportunity on Mallorca to taste the cuisine of several international Michelin-starred chefs all in one place and on one night. The Safari Culinario each July at the St Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort is a gastronomic treat that no foodie should miss. We attended a previous Safari Culinario in 2013, and I wrote an article about it, published in Food & Wine journal. The event was the best we had been to since moving to […]

Friends from Oxford have just stayed with us for eight nights and, although I have had a break from writing over that period, we have been enjoying Mallorca’s gastronomy as much as ever. Of all the people who come to stay with us, Duncan and Kristina’s gastronomic tastes are the closest to our own and we make a point of taking them to places we enjoy – because we know they will too. Dinner by the sea […]

A top catering service on Mallorca

Anyone looking for a catering company on Mallorca has plenty of choice, with some excellent catering and private chef services available. Should you ever need to know, the local word for catering is . . . catering – pronounced ‘cattering’. We’ve never hired a catering service but, having tasted their food on quite a few occasions, have recommended Finca Catering (previously known as Top Catering) to friends planning parties. The Manacor-based company has been looking […]

Within the past hour, the news that every decent chef in Spain and Portugal has been waiting for was announced: the Michelin stars for 2015. Last year on Mallorca there were five restaurants with Michelin-starred cuisine. For 2015 there are two new additions; the restaurants with stars in 2014 have retained them for 2015, making a total of seven restaurants each with one star.  I’m pleased to say I’ve eaten in them all and can confirm that […]

Being British is cool right now. At least it is at Spanish department store chain El Corte Inglés, which has just launched its ‘GREAT British Festival’. All things British feature in this promotion, and they include food products. To kick the event off in fine style, Majorca Daily Bulletin collaborated with Palma ‘s Avenidas’ branch of the department store and had top British chef Marc Fosh (one of their columnists) do a showcooking event using some of […]

The following is a heavily abridged version of my article, published in the Majorca Daily Bulletin on March 2nd, 2014, and based on an interview I did with Claire Hutchings – finalist in the 2011 series of ‘MasterChef: The Professionals’ – now working at Zaranda restaurant. Claire also featured in the news section of the ‘abcMallorca Restaurant Guide 2014/15’. From Moseley to Mallorca for MasterChef finalist The pretty petite blonde from the Birmingham suburb of Moseley has […]

Balearics’ best burrata?

Burrata. Even the name sounds lovely rolled around the tongue, when said with an Italian accent. Rolling this creamy cheese speciality from Southern Italy (Puglia) around your tongue is even better. Best not to think about the calories though . . . My first burrata experience was a few years ago at Ribello, a smart Italian restaurant in La Lonja, Palma. Along with the editor of abcMallorca magazine and a photographer, we were trying the place for a restaurant review I was to write.
