If there’s one thing I enjoy more than watching a professional chef at work, it’s eating the food I’ve seen created in front of me. My best experience of this on Mallorca was now quite a while ago, at Tomeu Caldentey’s Michelin-starred restaurant Es Molí d’en Bou in Sa Coma; I was there to write a restaurant review, and the photographer and I sat at the chef’s table in the kitchen to watch the brigade […]
Petit Hotel Son Arnau is one of a growing number of stylish boutique hotels in rural Mallorca. On the edge of the village of Selva (just a couple of kilometres from Inca), it opened at the beginning of 2014 and is run by Alex and Susan Terry. You can read their story in my article for abcMallorca here: http://issuu.com/abc-llorca.com/docs/76th_abcmallorca_summer_edition/79?e=0 Dinner at Petit Hotel Son Arnau Although the hotel dining room is not open to the public, we were lucky […]
Friends from Oxford have just stayed with us for eight nights and, although I have had a break from writing over that period, we have been enjoying Mallorca’s gastronomy as much as ever. Of all the people who come to stay with us, Duncan and Kristina’s gastronomic tastes are the closest to our own and we make a point of taking them to places we enjoy – because we know they will too. Dinner by the sea […]
If I had to name my one indispensable Mallorcan product – apart from the wines! – it would have to be the island’s luscious extra virgin olive oil. Olive trees first came to Mallorca more than two thousand years ago and today there are thousands of hectares of land devoted to growing the trees. Many of them are more than a hundred years old, and nature and time have sculpted their trunks into living artworks – shapes that further enhance the […]
Anyone looking for a catering company on Mallorca has plenty of choice, with some excellent catering and private chef services available. Should you ever need to know, the local word for catering is . . . catering – pronounced ‘cattering’. We’ve never hired a catering service but, having tasted their food on quite a few occasions, have recommended Finca Catering (previously known as Top Catering) to friends planning parties. The Manacor-based company has been looking […]
Last night we were among the many tapas fans at the latest Peccata Minuta event, organised by Chefs(in) in Palma de Mallorca. The format was slightly different to their previous events, in that it was necessary to reserve places in advance and possible to buy tickets before the night. That was a shrewd move, which made the process of getting into the venue quick and easy – and must have made it a lot easier for the chefs involved to plan […]
How do you escape the many visitors that throng to Palma in summer? Some come for a break from the island’s beautiful beaches; some are cruise ship passengers – disgorged from their floating holiday homes to try and ‘discover’ Mallorca’s capital in a few hours. Most want to spend some time relaxing over a drink or something to eat during their visit. Respite, relaxation and Rialto Living Cafés and bars on the main thoroughfares in […]
British chef Marc Fosh – the first (and so far only) British chef in Spain to have had his cuisine recognized with a Michelin star, while he was at Reads Hotel on Mallorca – has been named 2014-2015 ambassador for olive oils of Mallorca (Embajador del Aceite de Mallorca). This is the fourth time that the Consejo Regulador de la DO Aceite de Mallorca has chosen an ambassador for the island’s oils; the title recognizes the […]
